Ocotea rubra of the Lauraceae family is a tree native to Guyana, Trinidad and the lower Amazon (Brazil), reaching a height of 25-40 m with diameters of 0.5-1 m and sometimes up to 1.2 m. The trunks, generally straight and cylindrical in shape, are slightly swollen on the lower page. It is a moderately strong and heavy wood (the density of air-dried wood is between 640 and 720 kg/m3), the texture is rather coarse; the grain is braided to straight but it is recognizable in its distinctiveness and is particularly elegant with dark shades.
