Bolivar or tulip tree is a trade name for the wood Liriodendron tulipifera L., a member of the Magnoliaceae family, also known as tulipiferous or tulipier. It is a wood primarily of North American origin, although it is also found and available in Europe. The plant grows tall, straight and rather fast and provides timber whose workability, stability and specific weight (480 kg/m³ dried) make it suitable for a large number of uses. It is offered in a wide range of colors that enhance its grain, offered mainly in “flame” or “cathedral” figuration, obtained by shearing or cutting on the flat or tangentially to the annual growth rings. On request, it is available either with a “striped” grain, obtained by specific machining on the quarter, or with a variegated grain, obtained by the flaking process. Given the compactness of its fiber, veneer has a typically closed, silky pore, similar, for example, to walnut, pear or cherry.
